Teachpereneurs panel discussion – January 22nd, 2014

So what’s a "teacherpreneur," anyway? Another fancy word summoned from the din of voices championing privatized education? No way.

Some years ago, deep in conversation with other accomplished teachers from across the country, Ariel Sacks mentioned the term, first coined by Vicki Davis. Everyone paused to consider it—and then came a rush of possibilities. What if you could teach and also have time, space, and reward to innovate or share what you know?

Join the Center for Teaching Quality and Gotham Schools for a no-holds-barred exploration of the big ideas in Teacherpreneurs: Innovative Teachers Who Lead But Don't Leave (Jossey-Bass, 2013). The panel discussion will include authors Barnett Berry and Ann Byrd, as well as three NYC teachers whose stories are featured in the new book: Stephen Lazar, Ariel Sacks, and José Vilson.

Learn how expert teachers can use their skills and knowledge to tackle schools’ most pressing problems, benefiting students far beyond their own classrooms.

Panelists will make the case for innovative hybrid roles: accomplished teachers who are also virtual coaches, curriculum curators, edugame inventors, student data analysts, new teacher mentors, community organizers, policy researchers, or creators of their own schools.

The Ford Foundation is generously hosting and sponsoring the event. The panel discussion will take place in the East River Room at the Ford Foundation, 320 East 43rd Street.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with a welcome reception. Please arrive before 6:30 p.m. for the chance to connect one-on-one with the authors and teachers before the panel.
