The latest Creative Week lettering tour will cover Tribeca, the former manufacturing area that has become one of the most popular residential neighborhoods. Fortunately, many of the 19th century buildings have been preserved and thus there is an opportunity to see some of the oldest lettering to be found in New York City. As usual the tour will include a wide mix of lettering styles (classical Roman capitals, Art Deco, versals, blackletter, grotesques, scripts), materials (stone, terracotta, metal, wood, plastic) and techniques (carving, casting, painting). The emphasis will continue to be the historical, social and architectural uses of lettering in New York as well as their aesthetics. It will begin and end at the Mercer Hotel in Soho.
