Let us be your guide on a creative discovery journey of pleasure in our exclusive tasting of Champagne poured from Magnum. Join us and our special guest the wine philosopher Cain Todd on April 28th 2013 at 7 pm in the Champagnoteque in Brussels.
The theme of our evening is Eyes Wide Shut. We aim to explore our sense of taste and smell in ways we have never done before and through this discover which wine really gives us the most pleasure. It is a well known fact that taste and smell are inferior senses to vision, hearing and touch, and these latter senses often take over when we are tasting food and/or wine. In other words we often taste and smell with our eyes and our ears rather than with our mouth and nose. However, pure taste and smell can give us enormous pleasure if we really focus on these senses and this is what we will try to achieve in our tasting. We encourage you to taste with your eyes wide shut to let your mouth and nose guide you through the different subtleties of the wines and to connect to you your inner taste!
We are animating this one of a kind tasting with Cain Todd, the author of "The Philosophy of Wine: A Case of Truth, Beauty and Intoxication". Together we aim to skirt along objectivity and subjectivity of taste, smell and words to find your true match when we expose the beauty of each wine under the intoxication of the Magic of the Magnum Bubbles!
Our tasting is limited to 20 people to allow everyone to truly explore their sense of taste in a cosy and intimate environment. This is why we decided to create a "home from home" for the evening in a hip private appartment in central Brussels. We have picked the wines for their individuality and their expression of their unique terroir and winemaking. We will pour 7 Sparkling Wines (including several growers Champagnes) from Magnum, as we believe tasting from Magnum will give you the ultimate tasting experience with its added complexity, and hope to taste 3 wines blind. All the wines are available in for purchase in Belgium in their regular bottle size, and we will provide details of what was tasted and where you can stock up on these wines.
We have chosen the wines in function of their exclusive character, their approachability and ability to pair well with food. Each wine has a story to tell and we believe that blind tasting these terroir wines will allow you to discover a different dimension in sparkling wine especially when poured from Magnum paired with our tantalizing food selection of oysters, iberic ham belotta, foie gras, parmigiano reggiano, and other especially well matched appetisers.
This exclusive tasting experience will be hosted by two naturally entertaining wine educators. Onneca and Caroline are both certified sommeliers, writers and wine consultants obsessed by sparkling wines and terroir.
Caroline Henry is specializing in grower's Champagne and writes for several specialized wine publications such as Wine-Searcher, Decanter, Vinogusto, Palate Press and Snooth. She teaches a Champagne course at the Reims Management School and lives in Hautvillers, Champagne. She also regularly judges in wine competitions, and is a member ofthe exclusive CWW (Circle of Wine Writers) and the FIJEF(Fédération Internationale des Journalistes et Ecrivains des Vins et Spiritueux) and is working on a book on the Terroirs of Champagne and Champagnes of Terroir.
Onneca Guelbenzu is a member of FIJEV, runs the online tv channel Winedefender.tv and writes for Winedefender.org. She also comes from a winemaking family in Navarra, has a master in Oenology, Viticulture and Marketing of Wine, and studies the prestigious Diploma of the WSET (Wine and Spirits Education Trust) in London. Onneca worked for several years in Penedes, the heart of the Cava district, and now lives and works in Switzerland where she focuses on promoting wine culture through the association Viva le Vin.
