Event Details

On Saturday, January 26, 2013, celebrate being part of a vast, socially diverse culture and community!

The Second Annual "
A Taste of Los Angeles Belly Dance" Festival is offering another healthy sampling of the best that Los Angeles has to offer!  Bring a friend and enjoy dancers you love, discover teachers that will excite and inspire you and meet up-and-coming dancers.  Los Angeles is a city bursting with surprises and treasures of unique talent within the world of belly dance.

It's all happening right here in your county, with workshops going on from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm and the ensuing festivities from 3:00 pm to 8:15 pm!  We are proud to host our event in another city located in our vast Los Angeles County region: ALHAMBRA

We never quite realize how large and beautiful our county is, and this year we want to hold it in one of our neighboring cities!

Here is a map of the cities we represent in Los Angeles County!

We will be working with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center to fundraise for Youth Services.  Their goal is to house and feed homeless gay, bisexual, transgender and lesbian youth under the age of 25 who are currently living in Los Angeles.

Proceeds from our event will be going toward the Youth Center, which offers counseling, food, clothing, shower, transitional programs and other services to help the LGBT youth community.  We will also be holding a clothing drive and plan to donate all items collected to the same charity.

See a great show and help make a difference!

We asked our L.A. community for your votes to choose 2013's workshop teachers, an you chose JEN MCDONALD and AUBRE HILL!

This years' teachers and workshops will be:

12:00PM - 12:15PM
Dancing to Dubstep, Roxstar Style

Love it or hate it (but if you're taking this class, I HOPE you love it!), dubstep has recently started to become a popular trend in the fusion bellydance world. For some reason, this highly produced style of music, with its synthesized melodies, high-speed rhythm and a bass beat to blow your ears off, is highly addictive to many performers. Roxy Roxstar is one such soul that has succumbed to dubstep addiction.  We hope it isn't fatal.

Roxy has been performing to dubstep frequently over the past two years, and though her style is by no means formulaic, she has a few choice techniques that often wind up worming their way into her movement.

In this workshop, she will walk you through her tips and techniques for giving a powerful performance to dubstep music. We will focus on adjoining certain movements to certain sounds. We will work on a short combo that you can slip into your next solo!

12:15PM - 12:30PM
Romany Punk Fusion and Fantasy

This workshop explores the relationships between primarily Eastern European Romany movement and “Gypsy Punk” music, a genre famously pioneered by the band Gogol Bordello.

IrinaXara will draw focus to the characterization inherent in Romany dance interpretation and matters of stereotyping and gender(ed) portrayal. The workshop will center dually on building characterization and interpretation, as well as study of ethnic movement and flavor and will also help students bring their own signature style to the genre.

With discussion of ethnic movement there will be a short discussion of genre musical traits and musicality. Though not the main focus of the workshop, the cultural influence of Steampunk fantasy may also be discussed.

Beginners and above.
