Event Details

TAPPED: The NFC Accelerator

Make your idea into a Near Field Communications reality! How about the chance to connect with some of the most influential people in mobile and NFC? How about the chance to win some major cash? Tap into that!

Visit our website at tappednfc.com for additional details, developer guide and NFC resources.

What it is

TAPPED: The NFC Accelerator is a collection of three free events, with one goal: drive innovation of novel NFC mobile app prototypes built on solid business plans.

Apps will need to focus on:

  • Social – Enhance, alter, and establish social interactions.
  • Gaming – Enrich games and possibly take them beyond the digital world and into the physical realm.
  • Internet of things – build bridges between the Android device and real-world objects. Leverage tools ranging from NFC tags, NFC-enabled appliances, or dedicated NFC-enabled devices built on Arduino and the Raspberry Pi minimal computing platforms.

Your app will need to run on Android, the leading smartphone platform for NFC development. Loaner devices will be available.,

Visual designers will be on hand to help with app user experience and graphics. You will also get a presentation template so you don’t need to worry about making your presentation to the judges look cool (you can still roll your own).

What you get

Developer help

While we encourage you to take a very good look at our development guide, sample project and app code, expert Android and NFC developers will be on hand. We will also have a back-end developer on hand to assist with server-side matters (as well as folks from Kinvey, a nifty back-end as a service cloud offering we love).

TAPPED tour events take place over the weekend and run from 10:30 am on Saturday through 6:30 pm Sunday. Coding will run from 11:30am Saturday through 3:00pm Sunday.

    • 10:00 pm - You can continue coding but we have to leave the space
  • Sunday
    • 8:00 am - Back at the Verizon Innovation Center (breakfast)
    • 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Judging presentation prep
    • 3:00 pm Coding ends
    • 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm Presentations to the judges

Very Important Note

Before we go any further we want to assure you: your code, ideas, thoughts remain YOUR OWN property (or your team’s). You keep your code wherever you want and we will never take it away from you. We want to help spur innovation and help NFC become ubiquitous and that’s it.

Also be aware that the ideas and prototype you present at TAPPED will no longer be confidential. It’s a hackathon and there are people (and maybe even press) around you.

Prizes and Rules
