TAPAS Grand Wine Tasting 2014

The Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society (TAPAS) is hosting their seventh annual Grand Wine Tasting of domestically-produced Tempranillos, Albariños, Garnachas, Verdelhos, and many more, from the wine regions of the western United States. Grapes native to the Iberian Peninsula produce some of the hottest-selling wines on the market right now, but not many people know that there are excellent and unique domestic versions being grown, too. Many TAPAS members are limited-production, family-owned wineries and will be pouring small lot wines that are not widely available. This year the event will be held at the Golden Gate Club at the Presidio on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
From 2:00 to 5:00 pm consumers will have an opportunity to taste wines produced by TAPAS members from grape varieties indigenous to Spain and Portugal that are now cultivated in America, in a casual walk-around setting where they may chat with the growers and producers.
This year’s event will highlight Tempranillo’s aging potential with a Kickoff Seminar comparing pairs of Aged and New Tempranillos from the same vintner. See one of the reasons why Tempranillo is the fastest growing variety worldwide!
The event schedule is:
- 12:00 Noon - 1:30 p.m. – “Aged Tempranillos” Over the past fifteen years, some of the West’s most cutting-edge winemakers have explored the charm and mystery of Spain’s noble grape grown in American soils. Join Stuart Spencer of St.Amant Winery, Earl Jones of Abacela, Jeff Stai of Twisted Oak Winery, Dorothy Schuler of Bodegas Paso Robles, and Louisa Sawyer-Lindquist of Verdad Wine Cellars as they share their passion, experience, and exquisite Tempranillo wines in this guided tasting. This one-of-a-kind seminar will feature pioneer vintners pulling aged Tempranillos from their cellars to pair with their current release wines. Compare mature and young Tempranillo wines and taste how the world's fastest growing variety mellows with age to become civilized and refined. Tickets are $95 and include early admission to the Consumer Tasting.
- 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. - Consumer Tasting. In conjunction with the walk-around tasting, the TAPAS Wine School (included with admission) will feature these informative consumer-oriented seminars and guided tastings:
- Garnacha/Grenache: Garnacha is the second most widely planted grape variety in Spain, after Tempranillo. This great European wine grape, a major Rhone variety, is also grown extensively in Australia and the United States. It ripens slowly, unlike Tempranillo, and thrives in sunny California and Arizona. Taste an exciting selection of Garnacha wines vinified by premier American wine producers specializing in Iberian grape varietal wines.
- Vino dulce: Taste rare dessert wines crafted by top American winemakers in a variety of styles, including a Graciano dessert wine, and port-style wines from grapes such as Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão, and Touriga Naçional.

Tempranillo Advocates Producers and Amigos Society (TAPAS)
TAPAS – Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society – is a nonprofit trade association of over one hundred wineries, growers, and amigos, whose mission is to promote Tempranillo and other varietal wine grapes native to the Iberian Peninsula, and wines produced from them in North America.
Tempranillo is the sixth most widely planted grape in the world, and the foundation of the red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero in Spain. Over the last eighteen years, a number of American growers and producers have discovered or re-discovered Tempranillo, along with other Spanish and Portuguese varieties like Albariño, Graciano, Garnacha and Verdelho, as well as the grapes used in Port, such as Touriga Naçional. During the same period, Spanish culture and cuisine have become more familiar to the public. Through tastings, seminars, press coverage, and the Internet, TAPAS aims to capitalize on this trend, raising consumer awareness of the food-friendly wines made from Iberian varieties, and providing broader exposure for the typically smaller, limited-production wineries making them.
