Event Details

Come and join Karen Ma on Thursday, July 17th at 7:00 PM as she discusses her debut novel Excess Baggage at Eastwind Books of Berkeley. The event will include a short reading, an author-led discussion and a book signing. Karen will also be available to answer audience questions.

Excess Baggage chronicles the lives of two Chinese sisters, one raised in China during the Cultural Revolution and the other in Japan during the freewheeling years of bubble capitalism. As they reunite in Tokyo as adults the sisters circle warily. Fueled by family lies and secrets, their initial distrust grows until each must confront a fundamental question: what is the meaning of home when your roots aren't secure?

Karen Ma has lived a combined 20 years in Asia working as a writer and journalist. Fluent in English, Mandain Chinese and Japanese, she has written for a number of international publications, including The International Herald Tribune, New York Newsday, The Japan Times and South China Morning Post. She is also the author of The Modern Madame Butterfly: Fantasy and Reality in Japanese Cross-Cultural Relationships (Tuttle, 1996).
