SUP & Paddleboard Races
Tracing it’s routes back to the 1930’s Santa Monica Pier paddleboard races – some of the first in the world – this year’s event offers epic competition. Courses start and finish on the sand immediately south of the historic and iconic Santa Monica Pier.
LONG COURSE - 5.5 mile loop that challenges our more experienced competitors.
Long Course Race Divisions:
ELITE RACE - Run concurrently with the Long Course, this is the same 5.5 mile loop and geared towards the sport’s top competitors - paddlers who have consistently placed in the top 10 in similar length events.
Elite Race Divisions:
Any Elite Race division that receives less than 10 entries will be merged into the appropriate Long Course division. In the case of womens divisions, entrants will have the option of racing in the mens Elite Race division.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded, based on registration, to at least the top 3 finishers in each Elite Race division. Elite Race registrants who pre-register more than two weeks will receive a distinctive event race jersey and other benefits.
FUN PADDLE - 2 mile loop for paddlers who are less experienced or just want to enjoy a more relaxed race with a friendly vibe.
Fun Paddle Divisions:
Team Challenge SUP Relay and "Luck of the Draw" SUP Relay Races
This year racers have a choice between two thrilling SUP relays.
The "Team Challenge" race is a competition for organized teams with intermediate and advanced racers. Teams representing brands, shops, beach clubs or schools will battle it out for the "Tommy Bahama Team Challenge" Cup. Who will be the first team to have their name etched on it? Teams will consist of 4 paddlers, including at least one female.
The "Luck of the Draw" race is geared toward individuals who will be randomly assembled into teams of 4 paddlers to compete against similar teams.
This race is geared toward paddlers of any ability, but all registrants should have significant experience with launching from the beach and through the surf zone.
Both SUP Relay Races will take place on a 12'6 "stock" boards or smaller. Teams have the choice of riding a shared board provided by one of the paddlers or individual boards as long as they meet the “stock” requirements. Top three finishing teams in each of these races will receive awards.
Warning: All of our races involve a “beach start” meaning that racers will have to navigate in and out of the surf zone. For everyone’s safety, we encourage all racers to make certain they have significant experience with launching from the beach through ocean waves. We encourage novice and even intermediate paddlers to take one or more classes with a certified instructor.
