Join us for our first-ever Eating with the Ecosystem fundraiser! The event will take place on the evening of October 6th aboard the Schooner Aurora out of Newport RI. The Aurora is a sailing ship that was originally used in the herring fishery. Feel the wind in her sails as you take in Narragansett Bay from her deck!
At the event, we'll be joined by past and future Eating with the Ecosystem guest speakers. Share a cocktail with Rhode Island's most forward-thinking fishermen and marine scientists!
Learn about how climate change is affecting our regional oceans, what a sea robin tastes like, and what it takes to keep our fishing industry going for the future -- all while you enjoy a sunset cruise of the Bay, feast on local Southern New England seafood, and support one of your favorite causes: Eating with the Ecosystem!
Profits from the dinner will support Eating with the Ecosystem's efforts to bring together community-based commercial fishermen, groundbreaking marine ecologists, and innovative chefs to transition our local seafood supply chain to one that is more in tune with our changing ecosystems. If you are unable to make it to the event, please consider making a donation to Eating with the Ecosystem by clicking the Donation button below.
Fare will include hor d'oevres, fresh from the sea! Fish will be donated by local fishermen and prepared by local restaurants, including Julian's, Cook & Brown, Hourglass Brasserie, The Wharf Pub, The Mooring, and Fluke Wine Bar and Kitchen! Sip on wine donated by Newport Vineyards and rum from Thomas Tew.
[A note about the weather: Bundle up, as it can be cold on the water in October. In case of a light rain, the boat is equipped with a canopy, so the sail will go on. In case of heavy rain, the rain date is Monday October 7th. Participants will receive an email if a date change becomes necessary. Pray for sun!]
Pay-as-you-can waiting list: If you would like to attend this event but are unable to commit a full $85 to the cause, please write to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. If tickets are still available 24 hours before the start of the cruise (5:00 PM on Saturday), we will release them to pay-as-you-can guests, in first-come-first-serve fashion.
We will be raffling off seafood-themed items and gift cards donated by local businesses. Prizes include a $100 gift card to Tallulah on Thames, a $50 gift card to Gabe the Fish Babe, a $50 gift card to the Newport Lobster Shack, a tote bag and backpack from Re-Sails, a $25 gift card to Green Envy, a shucking knife from Pan Handlers, a seafood cookbook from Island Books, and more! You don't have to attend the event to buy a raffle ticket - we'll draw winners on the boat, but you don't have to be present to win. Raffle sales end at 3:00PM on Sunday. If you can't make it to the event, buying raffle tickets is a great way to help support Eating with the Ecosystem!
