The Sunday Assembly, New York City’s wildly popular new godless congregation, is making history this weekend by hosting Charles Darwin's great-great grandson, Matthew Chapman, at its grandest meeting to date this Sunday July 28th at 12:30 p.m.
The featured speaker July 28th is Matthew Chapman, who is Charles Darwin’s great-great grandson. Chapman is also a noted screenwriter/director (2011’s “The Ledge”), author of “Trials of the Monkey” and “40 Days and 40 Nights”, and founder of ScienceDebate.org, a national campaign to encourage science debates between presidential candidates. Author of “The Citizen Lobbyist” Amanda Knief will also address the “congregation.” Hosting the event this month is NY Regional Director for American Atheists and co-director of the documentary “Refusing My Religion” Michael Dorian.
Sunday Assembly is about engaging talks within a full-on-fun and “spirited” show. SA’s live house band plays sing-a-longs to rocking tunes everyone knows and loves. And it’s all taking place in a bikini bar near Times Square, for now at least...
The first one last month was a smash hit and received media attention in The NY Daily News, Patheos’ Daylight Atheism, A-News, and Salon, among others. Who knew there were so many nonbelievers (and “faith fence-sitters”) in NYC who wanted to partake of something greater than themselves while growing the secular movement and having a Bloody Mary on a Sunday morning? Has the time indeed come for this community?
Victor Hugo said, “There’s no stopping an idea whose time has come,” and this might just be the perfect time for the emergence of a Sunday Assembly, especially here in NYC -- where anything’s possible.
The Sunday Assembly is a godless congregation that’s part atheist church, part-foot stomping show, and 100% celebration of being alive. The motto: live better, help often and wonder more. Pretty positive stuff for a bunch of nonbelievers, although everyone is welcome, regardless of one’s religious beliefs, or lack thereof.
The Sunday Assembly is the brainchild of comedians Sanderson Jones (bearded, over-excitable, international purveyor of The Comedy Sale) and Pippa Evans (musical, hilarious, BBC Radio 4, 4 Extra, The Showstoppers) who discovered on one long car journey to a gig that they were both thinking about starting a friendly community gathering for like-minded people.
Please join us in this quest to bring reason, appreciation, and wonder into the lives of anyone who wants to play along with us! Tell your friends. A godless gathering with terrific talks, great live music, and cool people — what better NYC experience do you want for your Sunday mornings?
