HIKERS, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
3 HIKING OPTIONS - 2.5 miles, 4.5 miles and 8 miles
For Hikers, once you register to hike, we'll email you more details regarding details for the day of the hike. There are 3 hiking options for different hiking comfort levels. We are shooting to Summit at 11AM. The core route is 4.5 miles and takes about 4 to 5 hours. You may opt for a longer route of 8 miles or go for the chair lift and take the shorter 2.5 mile route. Thus, the starting times will depend on which route you take. If you have questions, please ask.
TEAM CA SUBTEAMS:
Team CA is broken into subteams. You've probably been contacted by a team leader from one of our roughly 10 or so subteams. You may choose which team you'd like to hike with or just join in.
DETAILS ABOUT THE EVENT:
A group of big-hearted, high-energy Heart for Africa volunteers have designed a creative and exciting way to raise funds for Project Canaan in Swaziland. It started with the idea of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa, and has grown to include climbing in Taiwan, Canada, Kenya, Swaziland, and four states in the United States, with all teams summiting on June 30, 2012. Imagine people reaching to some of the highest points on earth to bring HOPE to a country filled with orphans and vulnerable children?
The 2011 Summit 4 HOPE event was a tremendous success! Not only did each team raise a tremendous amount of awareness, but collectively they were able to raise over $100,000! It is amazing what can happen when groups band together under a common vision!
The 2012 Summit 4 HOPE event has an even greater goal, and more teams. This year, we want to raise $125,000 for water projects on Project Canaan. As you know, water is life. Without it, we cannot grow the crops we need for the various feeding programs in which we are involved or be able to support the growing number of orphans who now call Project Canaan home. We need your help to build dams, dig wells and bore holes, and install irrigation!
On June 30th, please join us as 9 teams from around the globe all summit a mountain (or in the case of Taiwan, one of the world’s tallest buildings) to bring water, and HOPE, to a nation in desperate need of both.

Each team will plan accordingly to arrive at the summit of their mountain on June 30th. Each team will have their picture taken with a Heart for Africa flag at the summit of their mountain.
- Mt. Kenya (19,340’) in Moshi Tanzania, the tallest mountain in Africa
- Taipai 101 (once the tallest building in the world (2,046 steps).
- Mt. Hope - (3,727’) the highest point at Project Canaan
- Mt. Plymouth (14,433’) in Colorado, the second tallest mountain in the lower 48
- Mt. San Antonio (Mt. Baldy) (10,068') the highest point in Los Angeles County
- Mt. Ka'ala (4,025') the tallest mountain in the Waianae range on Oahu
- Mt. Mauna Kea (13,796’) the tallest mountain in Hawaii
- Stone Mountain (1,686') the world's largest piece of exposed granite
- Algonquin Park (1,466 square miles) the oldest provincial park in Canada
While the entire SUMMIT 4 HOPE event will raise $125,000, the Team California goal is to raise $20,000.
All funds raised by the SUMMIT 4 HOPE climb are tax deductible and will go directly towards Project Canaan, Swaziland.

I also just emailed all of you who are registered to hike a "Summit for Hope Hiking Options" sheet with a list of those hiking various routes, where to meet and more. If you didn't get that, contact me.
Also, here is a copy of the hiking details info - please review now - depending on the trail you take, you will need an Adventure Pass before Saturday!
- Do your best to get donations supporting your hike. Simply send people to this link: http://summit4hope2012.eventbrite.com and they can donate there - they can also include your name in the form saying who they are donating on behalf of if you'd like to track.
- Invite others to hike! We're presently shy of last year's total number of hikers. Lets get past 100!
- Socially share the hike. Use Facebook, Twitter or any site you frequent to get the word out! Invite and request donations.
- Corporate Sponsors: We have a number already which will be on the event t-shirt. We're open to additional sponsors.
- Hiking Registration Fees: Registration fees go directly towards our fundraising as well.
- Individual Hiker Support Donation (THIS IS YOU): Each hiker should be requesting support from their friends, family and coworkers. Any amount is helpful.

- At the top of the page is a form to both register to hike and/or donate only. You're welcome to invite other hikers as well as request donations. If hiking and making a donation, then you need to fill out both fields. For hiking only, just fill out that. For donation only or donation to support a hiker, use the donation field.
- Be sure to click on the "Email" - "Share" - "Tweet" - and "Like" buttons at the top of this page. This is a great way for you to simply share this page with friends and family and ask for their support.
- Tip: Most will not donate in support from just an email or Facebook share. It gives them an awareness. It will take your follow through to ask for a commitment. Whether it's $5, $50 or $500, it doesn't matter. It simply matters that each and every hiker does their best to secure donations of any amount.
- Other donations: cash and checks are also welcome. You may turn those into your team leader with a list of amounts and name and address of person donating so we may provide a tax receipt.

- It's not required to be a part of a subteam. You're more than welcome to hike and meet at the top by 11am.
Trail Options: 2.5, 4.5 or 7 miles one way
- Short Route is 2.5 mi one way = 2.5 hours, 2200 ft elevation gain. (recommended for most, strenuous but doable - equiv to twice up Garcia Trail in Glendora. Utilizes the ski lift)
- Middle Route is 4.5 mi one way = 4 hours, 4K ft elevation gain. (more serious day hikers, this is quite a strenuous hike)
- Long Route is 7 mi one way = 5 hours, 4K ft elevation gain (only serious hikers with proper preparation)
- If taking the ski lift (the short route), it's $20 both ways or $12 up and $10 down. MAKE SURE to have funds if you plan to take the ski lift.
Carry a minimum of 70 oz of water per person (typical camel back)
- Plan to be self-sufficient: food, good hiking shoes, sunscreen, hat

- Parking at Mt. Baldy Ski Parking Lot is free
- Parking at Manker Flats requires Adventure Pass
- Adventure Pass: You may purchase a pass at Sport Chalet or any Ranger Station, but the Mt. Baldy station will not be open for early starting hikers - it's open from 8am to 4pm. Recommend to get pass before the day of the hike - http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/vendors.php
- If under 18, need a printed liability form. Email your team leader or contact us and we'll send you this form which must be completed prior to the hiking day.
- Each team will be going different routes. Some teams will split into groups and go multiple routes.
- Talk with your team leader to find out options and starting times. Or, if you're going without a team, just pick a time and meet at the starting point.
- For a rough idea, I'd recommend you start no later than the following for the three hiking options in order to reach the Summit by 11am:
- - Short Route is 2.5 mi one way = Start by 8AM or earlier if you plan to take a lot of breaks. Meet at the ski lift partking lot and make sure you have cash to buy a ski lift ticket.
- - Middle Route is 4.5 mi one way = Start by 6:30AM or earlier for more break time. Meet around the Manker Flats camp ground.
- - Long Route is 7 mi one way = Start by 5:00AM or earlier for more break time. Meet near the ranger center.
- We've set 11am as our summit time for all teams under Team CA.
- We'll be carrying the Heart for Africa flag to the top and taking a team photo at 11am.
- Thus, be sure to leave early enough to allow time for breaks in order to summit on time.
- Note: If you encounter issues with your health during the hike, do not push yourself. Ask for assistance and decide if you need to stop, rest, or turn around.
- This year, we'll have a table somewhere before the first hiking start point (near the ranger station - so, look out for our table when heading up to get your gear) where hikers can come by and get their shirt and wristband. All registered hikers get a shirt. The t-shirts are sport/tech material and are appropriate for the day of the hike.
- Good local practice hike would be Garcia Trail in Glendora. It's roughly the same elevation gain per mile.

- Please note that there isn't cell reception for much/most of the hiking day, thus, be sure to get everything prepped and answered before the 30th.
