VMABC SUMMER CE – Sunday, August 15th, 2010

9:00 to 9:30 am – Registration & Refreshments

9:30 to 10: 30 am - Internal Medicine Topics:  Feline Obesity, Feline Diabetes, Chronic Diarrhea in Cats and Kittens

1:30 to 11:30 am - More Internal Medicine Topics:  Feline Pancreatitis, Vomiting n Cats and Colon Diseases, Nutritional Management of Cancer Patients

11:30 to 12:45 pm - Lunch Buffet sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition

12:45 to 1:15 pm - Texas A&M Imaging and Cancer treatment Center:  Advancing Clinical Care

Information for general practitioners concerning exciting new facilities and equipment that are part of the Texas A&M University Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center (ICTC).  The distinguishing features of the center will be reviewed and how these features will positively impact care delivery in domestic species.  In addition, information concerning novel radiation therapy and radiosurgery capabilities (CT TOMO radiotherapy) will be discussed. (25 minutes)

1:15 to 1:45 pm -  Image Guided Neurosurgery

Currently, the diagnosis of brain diseases in veterinary species largely relies on advanced imaging.  However, even MRI is imperfect at achieving an accurate diagnosis in some cases, which can greatly impact clinical care.  This presentation introduces general practitioners to image guided neurosurgery, a new technique available at Texas A&M University that allows for accurate and safe central nervous system biopsy. (25 minutes)

1:45 to 2:45 pm - The Neurological Examination

Review of the basic elements of the neurological examination including assessments of mental status, gait, cranial nerves, postural reactions, spinal reflexes, and paraspinal palpation.  Video clips, photographs, and diagnostic images will be used to illustrate concepts. (50 minutes)

2:45 to 3:00 pm – Break & Refreshments

3:00 to 4:00 pm – Canine Intervertebral Disk Herniation: Diagnosis and Treatment

Summary of the normal function of the intervertebral disk, proposed means of disk degeneration, clinical consequences of disk herniation, methods of diagnosing disk herniation, and current treatment protocols. The reported success of medical and surgical therapies will be reviewed.  (50 minutes)

4:00 to 5:00 pm -  Maintenance Anticonvulsive Drugs

Brief review of seizure classification and associated etiologies, followed by use and pharmacology of traditional and newer anticonvulsive medications in small animals.  Appropriate monitoring, dose adjustment, and adverse events resulting from medications will be reviewed. (50 minutes)
