Event Details

Suddenly Last Summer, directed by Kameron Steele (MFA Directing 2014), will be performed at the CalArts Ensemble Theater 400.

Based on the play by Tennessee Williams, Kameron Steele (Director) brings a new version on stage: “Certainly, Suddenly Last Summer's focus on the predatory quality of the natural word takes its cue from Darwin's theory of evolution and our primal desires to hunt and procreate. The repression of these desires, as was the case with Sebastian, contributes to what Freud would have called  "anxiety neurosis."   Williams' choice to have Sebastian meet a similar fate as "Pentheus" in Euripides' The Bacchaeelevates the very personal dilemma of a single character's psyche to the communal scale of Greek Tragedy, and Catherine's choral revelation, while releasing her from the grips of dementia, shifts the play's interrogative lens to us and our contemporary society. What do each of us repress in ourselves?  How many steps are we away from psychosis or dissociative amnesia? And how close at our heels is the health establishment waiting to cash in on our misfortunes?  Ultimately, Suddenly Last Summer addresses the timeless and universal problem of family.  How far will a mother go to protect her dead son's good name? How badly will she neglect her daughter as punishment for perceived moral transgressions? How much courage will be needed to look the most appalling truths straight in the face, and survive them with grace?”
