SubtleData 2013 Developer Garage

A large number of people in the SubtleData ecosystem are in Austin the 2nd weekend in March, so we thought we'd invite you to our first ever Developer Garage event. Our goal is to bring together like-minded people who were interested in mobile and tablet applications for hospitality, mobile POS, mobile payments, and business intelligence.

Register here and we'll give you a badge at the door. No other requirements to attend. Use the coupon code "subtlerocks" to discount the $2 fee to free.

We've also noticed that many of the 500+ developers are raising capital. So we thought we would bring in a few top tier venture capitalists so that you could pitch your company. More details will be emerging as the schedule gets fine-tuned, but here is the high-level schedule.

Agenda (Subject to Modification)

Introductions and Welcome (Noon - 12:30pm)

For people who are not very familiar with the company, the technology platform, and what it can do for you. We'll talk about the product roadmap as well. We may also have some breaking announcements for you.

Ben Milne, CEO of Dwolla, Keynote Speaker (12:30pm - 1:00pm)

The future of payments is coming from an unlikely place; Des Moines Iowa. Dwolla founder and CEO Ben Milne is trying to change the way people transact by reducing the high cost of exchanging money between each other. For a merchant, accepting a credit card can cost as much as 3% of the transaction, which at times can eat up their entire profit margin. Dwolla charges a flat fee of $0.25, disrupting existing financial markets.

New Platform Features Demo (1pm - 2pm)

Those in attendance will get the pre-release of our new language libraries and some other nifty developer tools that we have coming this Spring. This demonstration will show you how you can use the lib to develop at a lightning fast pace. We'll build a fully-featured app in 15 minutes, and we'll give you the code and the lib at the end.

Pitch the VC's (2pm - 3pm)

We will be pre-selecting a small group of developers on our platform to pitch in front of a panel of Venture Capitalists. It will be a 6-minute demo format, which means no Powerpoints, just a demo of your application, how it works, and what it does. Confirmed investors so far include:

  • Scott Hartley, Mohr Davidor Ventures
Scott is a Stanford graduate and VC at Mohr Davidow, one of the top venture capital firms on Sand Hill Road. They are an investor in companies such as PunchTab, Shutterfly, and Rally with exits in companies such as Vitesse and Critical Path.
  • Ben Krall, Metamorphic Ventures
Metamorphic, based in NYC, is keenly interested in retail technologies, and has investments in companies such as tynt, MassRelevance, Fuze Network, and FetchBack.
  • Nitesh Banta, General Catalyst Partners
A Harvard grad, Nitesh is an entrepreneur turned investor. General Catalyst has invested in such great companies as AirBnB, GroupMe, Kayak and Outstart.
  • Nick Grossman, Activist in Residence, Union Square Ventures
USV has an amazing ability to bet on fantastic companies, such as Etsy, Foursquare, Twitter, MeetUp, Twilio, and Disqus.

Meet The Operators Panel (3pm - 4pm)

We'll have a panel of restaurant and hotel owners/operators talking about what they do and don't like about the technology they are currently using, their wishlist of features they would pay for today, what gaps they see in mobile technology, and insights into the mind and mentality of the decision-makers in the hospitality industry.

  • Mark Turner from Restaurant Freedom is an operator of 18 restaurant locations, and has an entrepreneurial background in restaurant franchise ownership, marketing, and advertising.
  • Lyle Worthington, CIO of Horseshoe Bay Resorts, frequently speaks at conferences and contributes to industry publications, as well as being on the HITECH Advisory Council.
  • Stuart Thomajan has a background in technology entrepreneurship, and was the driving force behind the creation of such hot Austin restaurants as Uchi, Uchiko, Paggi House, and most recently Swift's Attic.

New Platform Features Demo (4pm - 5pm)

Those in attendance will get the pre-release of our new language libraries and some other nifty developer tools that we have coming this Spring. This demonstration will show you how you can use the lib to develop at a lightning fast pace. We'll build a fully-featured app in 15 minutes, and we'll give you the code and the lib at the end.

Happy Hour (5pm - 6pm)

Come wrap up the event with us with open bar and snacks. Meet other like-minded people, share stories, enjoy a refreshing beverage, and relax.
