Workshop Description:

This session will focus on developing and utilizing strategies that will allow all to better understand and improve student motivation in the classroom. The presentation will encourage interaction and discussion among all attendees.

Alex Trebek Caldwell and Vanna White Lindon-Burgett will host an open Jeopardy competition (prizes will be awarded) using a Student Response System (aka clickers) among the attendees covering a variety of motivational topics that are detailed within the content of materials that are to be reviewed prior to the session. The session will continue with Faculty Feud (still more prizes) where the attendees will compete and learn the results of a survey of RSC students addressing various sources of motivation, classroom strategies that they believe are most effective, student behaviors and student suggestions for the classroom.  The discussion is guaranteed to be lively, interactive, and useful to all. Further, the student response system  will be used to help gather feedback and establish useful strategies that may be used to enhance our student’s motivation.

The topics that will be included in the competition/discussion will include:

  1. How to motivate students to do their best work and provide optimal effort in their classes.
  2. The malleability of student motivation.
  3. Sources of student motivation and strategies for improvement.
  4. The characteristics of the motivated student.
  5. Specific classroom strategies that have been shown to increase student effort, attention, and persistence (i.e. measures of motivation) will be discussed.
  6. Survey results detailing student behaviors and opinions that may provide insight into how our students view our classrooms, and what strategies they feel may be most effective.

We will have a Check-In sheet using the registration list at the workshop so there is no need to print your ticket.
