Structural Biology: Solving Protein Structures at the Synchrotron

Join the race to determine the structure and function of thousands of protein molecules that govern biological processes.  As a student in this course, you will do the work of a structural biologist, one who learns about life by studying molecules such as proteins.  In order to find the 3-dimensional structures of proteins, which are on the order of nanometers, students will use current research methods and the advanced capabilities of the NSLS user facility at BNL.

Students will experience the field of structural biology by:

  • Using chemistry to crystallize a protein
  • Getting data from a user beamline at the NSLS
  • Exploring how to analyze raw crystal data
  • Determining the 3D structure of a protein with computer modeling software

Participants must be entering Grades 10, 11, or 12

Participants must be 15 years or older at time of program.

Dates: August 4-8, 2014, 9 am - 4 pm
