Strong Women Exhibit

The Partnering Community Centers presents an art exhibit in celebration of Women’s History Month March 18 2013 – April 20, 2013. The exhibit, titled “Strong Women” celebrates the artistic achievements of women through various media including painting, photography, collage, sculpture and drawing. The opening reception will take place at one of the oldest Jewish Synagogues in Newark, Congregation Ahavas Shalom, in its affiliated Jewish Museum of New Jersey on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Viewing days and hours are Monday-Thursday 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit, sponsored by the Newark Arts Council will feature works by 32 women artists from Portland Oregon, Los Angeles, New York and New Jersey. The artists exhibiting are: Ruth Alvarado, Lavett D. Ore-Ballard, Ines Berges. Cathleen McCoy Bristol, Jacqueline Rocker-Brown, Maggie Brown, Ana Lucia Castelo, Rosetta De Beradinis, Monica Chavarria, Lisa Conrad, Jacqueline Cruz, Maria Estrela, Kathryn Eddy, Ya De Je, Adia Gibbs, Evelyn Graves, Mary Johnson, Diane Leonard, Julie Levine, Abby Levine, Monique Norris, Terry Norton-Wright, Sylvia Padilla, Alma Peralata, Marsha Pickett, Marian Rubin, Phoenix Savage, Tania Sen, Vanessa Rubia Sotorrio, Juanita Torres, Martha Wallulis and Jill Vasileff. The opening reception will feature performances by Mia X, Donna Holmes and Suburban Cultural Education Enrichment (SCEEP) alumni. The exhibition is curated by Armisey Smith, Executive Director of Partnering Community Centers.
The artists partaking in “Strong Women” embody the power and vision from the female perspective. The exhibit will feature literal and abstract interpretations of “strong women.” The new exhibition space of The Jewish Museum of New Jersey will be utilized to further explore the rich culture of the Lower Broadway region in Newark, support non-secular institutions like Avahas Shalom and expand opportunities for arts and cultural events for the surrounding community.
