Midwest Cleantech Open is hosting a panel discussion Strategic Partnerships in Cleantech on Tuesday, August 26 in partnership with sponsor, Sidley Austin.
The panel will discuss trends in strategic connections being made between large, established companies and emerging businesses. The discussion will cover the expanding role of the corporate strategic as an investor or partner, and how these relationships fit into the defined long-term strategy for both parties.
A networking reception follows the panel and the audience will include several innovative new ventures and top industry experts that are in town for Midwest Cleantech Open's two-day business clinic programming.

Moderator: Marc Gottschalk, Sidley Austin
Marc is currently a Partner at Sidley Austin LLP, where he serves as a member of the Environmental, Energy and Real Estate practices and focuses on matters involving clean technology and other emerging technologies. He is a co-founder and board chair of the Cleantech Open, the world’s largest business accelerator for early-stage clean technology companies. Marc also served as the co-chair of the Energy and Clean Technology practice at a well-known high technology law firm. While there, he assisted dozens of innovative cleantech companies go to market. Prior to joining Sidley, Marc served as chief business development officer and general counsel for Proterra Inc, a manufacturer of advanced electric drive and energy storage solutions for heavy-duty vehicles.
Panelist: David Weinstein, Freshwater Advisors
David is the founder and managing partner of Freshwater Advisors, a venture development firm that helps high-growth entrepreneurs and corporations with business development, market research, strategy execution, and fundraising advisory services. From 2003 through 2010 David served as the founding president of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center (CEC), a venture development non-profit organization that helped promising entrepreneurs build innovative and sustainable enterprises. During this time, he was also co-founder and managing director of the $10 million Illinois Innovation Accelerator Fund (I2A). Prior to the CEC, David served as CEO of two technology companies including Evergreen Technology Partners and BlueMeteor. From 1996 to 2000, he served as technology advisor to the Mayor of the City of Chicago.
Panelist: Adam Khan, CEO - AKHAN Technologies, Inc
Adam Khan is Founder & Chief Executive of AKHAN Technologies, a Midwest Cleantech Open accelerator alumni company and winner of the 2013 Midwest Innovation Summit. Prior to AKHAN Technologies, Mr. Khan studied both physics and electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago before pursuing research on the graduate level. Mr. Khan is co-inventor of the Miraj Diamond™ Platform, the world’s first CMOS Compatible N-type Diamond Materials & Devices—named by R&D magazine to the 2013 R&D 100 (widely known as the ‘Oscars of Innovation’). Adam was more recently named one of Forbes' 2014 30 Under 30 (Energy and Industry).
Panelist: Xavier Datin, Schneider Electric
Xavier has over 25 years of experience in R&D, sales, industrial management, marketing, business development and strategy through assignments in Asia, Europe and North America. In 2012, Xavier was named Senior Vice President Prosumer for North America and relocated from Hong Kong to Chicago. In this role, Xavier is responsible for developing solutions for prosumers, those customers close to consumers but whose buying practices are inspired by professional markets for product categories such as home improvement and small building efficiency. Xavier joined Schneider Electric in 1987, serving most recently as Senior Vice President LifeSpace Business Asia Pacific. Prior positions include CEO of Clipsal, a large subsidiary of Schneider Electric and Business Development Director for Schneider Electric in China, based in Beijing.
