Stop…In the Name of [Insert Name of Your Business Here]—Choosing and Using One or More Names for Your Small Business

At first glance, choosing (and using) a name for a new business might seem simple enough.  However, the interplay between (1) the name under which an entity (such as a corporation) is created, (2) one or more assumed names, and (3) trademarks or service marks, is far from simple.  For example, business owners sometimes mistakenly believe that they are free to use any name that the Texas Secretary of State allows them to register for a new entity.  Other business owners mistakenly believe that making an assumed name filing with a county clerk grants them rights to use the name, or even that an assumed name protects them from others who might want to use the same name.  Moreover, many people who are starting their own business aren’t aware of steps they might want to take before they invest in using a new name for their business.  This class will not only help the business owner avoid these and similar mistakes, but will also equip the business owner with an understanding of how to use the name of the business, rather than their own name, when appropriate.  This informational is presented by attorney Brent L. Vannoy.   Brent has been licensed since 1995 and offices in downtown Houston, where he has been a shareholder with the firm of Johnson DeLuca Kurisky and Gould, PC since 2002.

Marina Perez from Money Management International will highlight how small business owners can review their credit report at not cost and more importantly teach them how to create healthy credit.
