About the Artist...

Kamau Daáood is a mythic figure in the Southern California arts scene, a performance poet, educator and community arts activist who is widely acknowledged as a major driving force behind Los Angeles' black cultural renaissance. A native of Los Angeles, Kamau began working his craft in the 1960’s as a member of the Watts Writer’s Workshop, and honed his skills as a “word musician” working with Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.

His published work includes two books, “Ascension” and “Liberator Of The Spirit,” the poetry collection “The Language Of Saxophones” (City Lights 2005) and the acclaimed spoken word CD, “Leimert Park” (Mamma Foundation 1997). In 1980 he and drummer Billy Higgins co-founded The World Stage in Los Angeles, which grew into a black creative epicenter. Daáood is Director of the performance group "An Army Of Healers," and was selected the 2005 Poet Laureate Of The Watts Towers Arts Center.

S. Pearl Sharp’s award-winning films include The Healing Passage/Voices From The Water, Picking Tribes and several documentaries for the City of Los Angeles’ CH 35. Her literary work includes Black Women For Beginners (distrib. Random House) and two poetry w/jazz CDs, On The Sharp Side and Higher Ground.

Looking forward to seeing you present.

Peace & Many Blessings
