to honor

Stella Miller

Growing up in Oyster Bay with woods as her backyard, it is no wonder that Stella grew up to be an ardent lover of nature and wildlife.  Splashing in the creek, exploring every corner of the woods, her days were filled with discovery and adventure.  When Stella was not outdoors, she was voraciously reading nonfiction wildlife/conservation books which fostered her deeply held commitment to wildlife protection.

This lifelong passion led her to volunteer for Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society in 2006  and in 2007 she was elected president, a position she holds today.

Stella has spearheaded conservation advocacy efforts such as the national “Save Our Raptors” campaign and the Long Island “Keep Your Cats Indoors” educational campaign. She is a founder of the Preserve Plum Island Coalition and was instrumental in assembling the 50 organizations that comprise the coalition.  She coordinates community events, programs and activities, such as the annual 5K for Wildlife and Conservation.  Overseeing habitat restoration efforts at local preserves such as ShuSwamp, Stillwell Woods and Underhill Preserve, she works with officials on a state, county and town level to maintain the ecological value of these preserves.

After creating the Youth Outreach Committee, Stella mentored teenagers, teaching the valuable skills they need to become community leaders themselves.  In addition, she reinvigorated the chapter’s children’s programs, hoping to reach a new generation of conservationists, while urging parents to get their children involved in nature.   In March 2013 she was a recipient of the Norman Stotz Award for Outstanding Chapter Leadership, awarded by Audubon New York, for extraordinary volunteer service.

When not volunteering for the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society, Stella works full time as Coalition Coordinator at The Early Years Institute.  During her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, and birding.
