Any critical evaluation on the career of guitarist and composer Wayne Krantz finds one unmistakable trend throughout: reinvention. From his early work with artists such as Michael Brecker, Donald Fagen, and Steely Dan, through a succession of highly lauded solo recordings, Krantz has continuously evolved as an artist, always pushing himself in new and exciting directions.
Now, with his latest album Howie 61 (2012), Krantz has reinvented himself yet again with a stunningly creative recording and a bold new direction. The disc features Vinnie Colaiuta (Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Sting), Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock), Pino Palladino (Jeff Beck, The Who, Eric Clapton), and Anton Fig of The Letterman Show's Worlds Most Dangerous Band, among many others (Keith Carlock, James Genus, Nate Wood, Henry Hey, Owen Biddle, Charley Drayton, John Patitucci, John Beasley, Jeremy Stacey, Paul Stacey, Yasushi Miura, David Binney, Kenny Wollesen, and Gabriela Anders). Guitar Player Magazine calls the collection "nothing short of a masterwork; 10 songs packed with angular hooks and wry, provocative lyrics, delivered in an off-center vocal or spoken-word manner."
Tonight at Highline Ballroom, Krantz will perform with a stellar band featuring the Modern Drummer of 2012, Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting, James Taylor), and the famed Anthony Tidd (Steve Coleman, Björk, Greg Osby, Meshell Ndegeocello) on bass. As DownBeat Magazine declared, "Hold onto your hat."
