Egg Drop In this workshop we will see who can design the best protective housing for an egg before dropping it 10 feet from the air. This classic problem solving activity will challenge participants to use their creativity and their science knowledge.
Soft Electronics with the Makey Makey and Scratch The Makey Makey allows you to turn any object into a computer key. You can design a video game controller with play dough, make a piano out of a banana, or other limitless possibilities. We will hook up the Makey Makey and make a basic game with Scratch.
Spaghetti Challenge Using only 20 pieces of spaghetti, a yard of string, and a yard of tape, your mission is to build a freestanding structure that can hold a marshmallow. You only have 15 minutes!
Paper Speakers In this workshop participants will turn ordinary post-it notes into speakers by using rare earth magnets and wire. A fun hands on activity and crash course on the physics of sound.
Paper Rockets Using just ordinary paper and tape participants will create an aerodynamic rocket that can be launched toward the sky. After designing and building your rocket, you'll use our bicycle-pump compressed air launcher to send it off.
Intro to Soldering Come put together a basic circuit and learn the technique that enables just about all electronics you buy in a store. A must have skill for current and future Makers. Walk away with a blinking LED badge that you can wear. (for 4th and 5th graders only)
3D Printing and Plastic prototyping Demo If you've never seen a 3-D Printer before, this is a good chance to see them in action materializing a physical plastic object before your very eyes. You'll also work with Instamorph hand-moldable plastic to make your own plastic sculpture.
2-D Design and Vinyl Sticker Cutting Learn how to use the free vector design software inkscape to design your own nametag. We'll then cut out your design using our vinyl cutter, which is basically a sticker cutting robot.
Silk Screen Printing Bring your own blank tshirt and learn how to do silk-screening, using our pre-designed STEAM Day screens. Take away your own souvenir to commemorate the day.
