Event Details

Learn about Florida Plants and Animals and Ecology through this fun contest!

The State 4-H Forest Ecology Contest is a great event for youth interested in our Florida trees, plants, wild animals and local ecology.  The contest is similar to the Marine Ecology Event.  Ms. Wendy Turner is the adult volunteer organizing  and training for our local youth and will be registering teams for Osceola County 4-H.  Several local trainings are being planned.   Check the tickets for practice meeting locations and times.

For more information about this contest, please contact Wendy Turner at wturner97@gmail.com

There is  a lot of information that can be studied from home computers on the web link- For more information on Forest Ecology, please consult the 4-H Forest Ecology Website http://sfrc.ufl.edu/extension/4h/contest_home.html

Each year, 4-H youth from across the state convene near Gainesville, Florida to test their knowledge of Florida’s forests. Six contest stations enable youth to test their identification skills, compass skills, and knowledge of forest ecosystems. Youth will be asked to identify tree and plant leaves and fruits, insect and disease damage from samples, and wildlife on a forest walk; follow a compass course, and answer multiple choice questions on ecology and topography maps. Seniors will also be tested on tree measurement and perform in a quiz bowl.  For information on rules, consult the State 4-H events website at http://florida4h.org/programsandevents_/forest-ecology/

Registration for participants and observers is required and will be available on 4H Online beginning February 21, 2014 and will close on March 21, 2014. Observers are free and contest participation is a $5 fee per youth.  All youth must be registered as 4-Hers through 4-H online and accepted through UF IFAS Extension in Osceola County.
