Johannesburg's first Startup Grind event is to be held on the 26th September, with guest speaker Gian Visser, founder and CEO of Afrihost. Gian was born and bred in Johannesburg, to a mining family originally from Carletonville. As a young man he was a natural entrepreneur, having started several small enterprises as a student. Gian studied a BCom degree towards a Chartered Accounting qualification. In 1997, he partnered with childhood friend Brendan, deciding that entrepreneurship was his true passion and in August of 2000 they joined their high school friend, Peter, to form Afrihost, opening their first 'office' in a room of his parent's house. Gian established a culture of going the extra mile for clients and developing personal relationships, as well as relying on client referrals and testimonials over traditional marketing and advertising. By 2009, Afrihost had grown to be one of the largest web hosting companies in the country and are today renowned for their famous ADSL pricing which set the standard in South Africa, and they haven’t fallen since. The secret to Gian’s success is his wife, Revé and his 3 delightful children - though he sometimes thinks of Afrihost as his fourth child. Gian also strongly believes in giving back through charity and actively donates regularly to orphanages.
