 Starting a Nonprofit Organization

Are you passionate about a certain issue or topic? Do you want to make change happen?

Learn how to turn your passion into a reality by starting a nonprofit organization. This seminar covers the key steps to start and successfully run a nonprofit organization, including: nonprofit incorporation, nonprofit management structure and roles, fundraising for nonprofit organizations, and more!

This lecture-style seminar is four hours long and includes interactive discussions. Participants are encouraged to share their issue and/or topic of interest. The general outline of the workshop is:

  •  What does "nonprofit" mean?;
  •  Overview and importance of nonprofit industry;
  •  Nonprofit business alternatives;
  •  Forming a nonprofit organization;
  •  Steps to incorporation;
  •  Creating a board of directors; and
  •  Raising funds for your nonprofit organizations.

This seminar will be facilitated by Terry Horton. 

Terry Horton is Senior Program Advisor to Philanthropic and Nonprofit Services at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this role, she consults one-on-one with nonprofit organizations throughout the State of Michigan, and trains hundreds of nonprofit leaders on such topics as board governance, fund development, strategic planning and succession planning.  Terry also provides support to numerous Michigan-based foundations where she works to help improve the capacity and performance of their grantee programs. She serves and an adjunct professor to the School of Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration at GVSU teaching graduate-level courses in nonprofit strategic planning and board governance.  Terry previously worked in Alaska as Senior Consultant to The Foraker Group, a nationally-recognized nonprofit capacity-building organization and state association.  Among her responsibilities she regularly worked to support programming of Alaska’s largest foundation, the Rasmuson Foundation.  She has also worked as executive director of a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate and served as resident director for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs where she consulted nonprofit organizations in Central Asia and Russia. Terry received her J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon and her B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. She received a Certificate in Fundraising Management (CFRM) from the The Fundraising School at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and proudly serves on the board of directors of the Association of Fundraising Professionals – West Michigan.
