Richard M. Stallman at the Université de Moncton

The Department of informatics at the Université de Moncton, as well as its Student Council are happy to invite you to attend Dr. Stallman’s conference on Free Software in Ethics and in Practice. Dr. Stallman is a renowned computer scientist who launched the development of the well known free GNU operating system in 1984. The talk is aimed at the general computer-using public and is not intended to be technical.

All are welcome to assist. Participation is free of charge. Please book a ticket, using this website, in advance if you plan to attend. The talk will be held at the Theatre Hall in the Jeanne-de-Valois building on campus.

Free Software in Ethics and in Practice

Richard Stallman will speak about the Free Software Movement, which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can cooperate to control their own computing activities. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system, often erroneously referred to as Linux, specifically to establish these freedoms.

Richard Stallman launched the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award, and the Takeda Award for Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several honorary doctorates.

Note: After registring your seat is reserved. You should receive an e-mail from EventBrite. There is no need to print a ticket. There is no confirmation number. If you have any questions please contact us by e-mail using the "Contact Host" link at the bottom of this page.

Note: The conference will be held in the English language.

The Department of informatics and its Student Council would like to thank the Université de Moncton, the NRC and the NBCC Moncton Campus IT and Social Science Department for their support.
