SANDRA ELECTRONICS - Karl O'Connor (Regis) & Juan Mendez (Silent Servant) performing live! (Downwards, Minimal Wave)
Sandra Plays Electronics is the esteemed D.I.Y. electronic project of Karl O’Connor AKA Regis. O’Connor began playing and recording his own music in Birmingham, England when he was 16 years old, collaborating with friends in short-lived bands such as Family Sex and also recording on his own as Sandra Plays Electronics. In 1999 O’Connor met Juan Mendez (Silent Servant), and Mendez soon became instrumental to the evolution of Downwards, O'Connor's record label. The duo also teamed up to produce material on their now defunct Sandwell District label as well as collaborating on a spin off 10” release as Sandra Electronics.
Karl O'Connor is most certainly Regis and it is also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms. Unconventional and single-minded to say the least (what label can boast a back catalogue free of the industry standard cash cow remix) by decentralising the focus on the dj/producer personality, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. Degenerate art indeed.
IN AETERNAM VALE - US Debut (Minimal Wave)
In Aeternam Vale's work remains astonishingly powerful, cold and caustic with its uncompromising minimalism, but also provocative and capable of smashing your ass on the dance-floor. In Aeternam Vale was created in Lyons (France) in 1983 and was very much influenced at the beginning by punk-rock nihilism and aggressiveness.
SILENT SERVANT - DJ set (Downwards, Sandwell District, Jealous God)
Juan Mendez is not your average techno producer. Coming of age in '90s Los Angeles, he grew up with an equal appreciation for both warehouse techno and DIY noise rock, an unusual genesis that can still be detected in his musical output. At his core, Silent Servant is a maker of dark and dubby techno, but his vision is informed by the sounds of shoegaze, post-punk, industrial, and various strains of leftfield dance music. Though he's perhaps best known as an affiliate of Sandwell District, Mendez has nonetheless assembled a substantial discography of his own over the years, including last year's widely celebrated Negative Fascination LP.
VERONICA VASICKA - DJ set (Minimal Wave)
Veronica Vasicka founded the labels Minimal Wave and Cititrax as a way to re-issue—and often release for the first time—the cold and dark brand of homemade, analog synth-based electronic New Wave from the late ’70s and early ’80s that she has championed for nearly a decade on her weekly East Village Radio show. Minimal wave as a genre has existed for decades—some might say it even died out for a period—but Vasicka gave it a name and a place to be reborn. With a background in photography, Vasicka designs her labels’ releases herself, adding a personal spin to her curating work.
