Event Details

SSV Sustainability Leaders Steering Committee

Provide guidance to SSV on our key programs; alert SSV and other partners to important issues and opportunities.

Agenda:

1.       Each person spends 2-5 minutes talking about a topic that is important to them such as a new development in sustainability they have read about, favorite sustainability story, greatest frustration this past year, greatest success this past year or an issue that is facing their company and/or a challenge they are working on. Invite insights or advice.

2.       How do we engage more people from each of your companies with sustainability and SSV (HR, Finance, C-Suite).

Executive Summary - January 18th Meeting

Upcoming events:

New version of the sustainability roadmap

It could offer a snapshot of where companies in Silicon Valley stand in terms of sustainability

  • We could release an overall score or show how many companies are at each step without giving any names away

  • SSV could create a coordinated approach.

    • SSV could convince 10-15 SV-based companies to make a joint commitment to fill in the roadmap and try to get to the next level.

    • It would create more confidence, and clear the fear of being the only one to do it

  • SSV could try to get leading organizations to make a serious senior level commitment to action in another area using the roadmap

  • Find a way to put sustainability into the budget, allocate it and make the change. It is hard to organize around values. It will be more efficient to translate these values into goals and numbers

Company Insight

Peter Graf: Example of Integrated Reporting at SAP:

  • It is surprisingly a tool to drive integrated thinking, and not only the other way round

  • SAP saved a ¼ billion dollar by saving energy. Last year, revenues + personal grew by 15%, energy use stayed flat thanks to renewable energy

  • SAP is looking at implementing a carbon tax internally, in sales for example. Microsoft did it in May 2012. Look out for more information
