Squat is a four piece jazz band that plays a unique blend of original music inspired by '60's era Blue Note, gospel, jump blues, salsa, bossa nova, samba, trance, and drum 'n' bass.
The members of Squat met in 1994 while attending jazz improvisation classes at the University of Georgia taught by pianist and composer Steve Dancz. The band soon began to draw large crowds in Athens venues including the High Hat and the Georgia Theatre. After releasing their first album Cycles, the band hit the road as the opening act for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Derek Trucks Band. Over the years, Squat has shared the bill with many diverse acts including Maceo Parker; the B-52's; Medeski, Martin, and Wood; the String Cheese Incident; Big Head Todd and the Monsters; the Squirrel Nut Zippers; Charlie Hunter; Sector 9; and Maynard Ferguson. The band has also been a featured performer at area festivals including the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Human Rights Festival, Bel Chere, the Athens Jazz Festival, the Cherry Blossom Festival and Athfest.
"Taking eclecticism to new heights, Squat combines the feel of a party band, a dance band and a serious improvising jazz band, mixed with high spirits and palpable joy in music making. These guys can play and take it very seriously, but with tongue firmly in cheek, as styles are mashed together and labels obliterated. Their high spirits and the fact that they truly enjoy what they are doing— creates an infectious attraction and immediately brings the listener to their side. The fact that their music is completely unpredictable only adds to the enjoyment." — Budd Kopman, All About Jazz
"…you could easily convince yourself that Squat is an excellent Latin jazz band, a feisty George Benson-esque smooth jazz outfit, a smoking roadhouse blues combo, beboppers, spacy funkateers or any number of things. But they are all of that and more, a versatile quartet that sees no reason to play by the rules, and that makes for a satisfying, often surprising listening experience." — Jeff Tamarkin, All Music
