Course Description

During this all-day adventure, we’ll cover the basics of SQL Server Integration Services, along with several intermediate and advanced topics.  Attendees will learn how to use SSIS (going way beyond the Import/Export Wizard) to move data, handle daily ETL tasks (and even a few non-ETL tasks), and how to build a solid SSIS framework for any solution that needs to move data from one place to another.

Course Objectives

During the morning sessions, we’ll focus on SSIS 2008, working with the current version of the tools, including SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008.  Along the way, attendees will learn several tips and tricks that professional SSIS developers have been using for years.  In the afternoon sessions, we’ll switch gears and focus on SSIS 2012 – the new kid on the block.  We’ll focus on the differences and new features available in SSIS 2012, working with the latest toolset including SQL Server 2012 and Visual Studio 2010. Attendees will learn about migration options and how to prepare today for their eventual move from SSIS 2008 to SSIS 2010.  By the end of the day, attendees will realize how invaluable SSIS truly is and hopefully understand how they can take advantage of the features and strengths that come with it!

Prerequisites

·         Beginner level SSIS experience, experienced users of SSIS will also gain from it.

Course Hardware and Software Requirements

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own laptops with SQL Server 2008 and/or SQL Server 2012 installed (with SSIS) to take advantage of the lab sessions.  However, this is *not* a requirement for attending the class - attendees will be able to follow along as the instructore walks through each lab exercise.

Each attendee will receive printed copies of the class materials (presentations) as well as step-by-step lab instructions for each exercise.  In addition, each attendee will receive a CD with electronic copies of the class materials and lab instructions.  All of the exercises will be based on the AdventureWorks and AdventureWorksDW databases, using the most recent releases of these sample databases for both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2012.  These sample databases will also be included on the CD in case attendees bring their laptops but do not have the sample databases installed yet.
