SPECIAL SPRING CONTINUING EDUCATION EVENT

****LIMITED TO ONLY 40 ATTENDEES****

 Co-hosted by the Veterinary Medical Association of Bexar County and the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Veterinary Service 

 

Featuring Dr. Doug Owens, Chief of Internal Medicine and Outpatient Services at the DOD MWD Veterinary Service at Lackland AFB  

 

 Six Hours of Continuing Education Topics:

 * Military Working Dog Demonstration - This will be a demonstration of the detection and patrol abilities of the United States Military Working Dog. (30 min)

 

* Department of Defense Military Working Dog Veterinary Service Tour - (Dedicated to the memory of LTC Daniel Holland, DVM that was killed by a road side bomb in Iraq) - This is a 38,000 sq. ft. AAHA certified (Level 5) veterinary specialty referral center for government owned working dogs.  (30 min)

* Military Working Dog Program Overview - This interactive presentation will summarize the history of the United States Military Working Dog program.  It will further focus on the organization, training, and uses of working dogs within the program.  (1 hour)

* Working Dog Veterinary Medicine - This interactive presentation will review the common veterinary working dog problems and diseases encountered throughout the world.  It will include case management tips and address many issues that civilian veterinarians may encounter with working dogs presented by local and federal clients.  (1 hour)

LUNCH PROVIDED BY:  Veterinary Medical Association of Bexar County

* New USDA Federal Veterinary Accreditation Program - Dr. Joe Garrett with APHIS will discuss new changes to the Federal Accreditation program and what it will mean for ALL veterinarians.  Attendees will be walked through the registration process that will allow them to maintain current Federal Accreditation status or acquire new Federal Accreditation.  (1 hour lunch presentation)

* Emerging Infectious Disease:  American Trypanosomiasis - Attendees will be presented with new information concerning this emerging zoonotic disease within Bexar County and the Southern region.  The presentation will focus on the life cycle/transmission, geographical distribution, clinical signs, diagnosis/treatment, prognosis and prevention, zoonotic implications, and clinical case examples.  (1 hour)

* Leptospirosis: Does the Water Taste Funny to You? - Participants will have a heightened clinical awareness of Leptospirosis in animals.  There will be a review of recent changes in taxonomy, current geographic distribution, testing modalities, vaccination, and discussion of the significance of positive test results.  This presentation will enable veterinarians to better prevent, diagnose, and treat this zoonotic disease that is increasingly present in Bexar and surrounding counties.  (1 hour)
