“A Good Deal: The United Nations and Business”
H.E. Jan Eliasson was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and took office on July 1, 2012. Representing Sweden internationally, H.E. Eliasson has had diplomatic postings in numerous countries and been the Representative of Sweden to the UN, Ambassador of Sweden to the United States, Sweden’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and served as Minister for Foreign Affairs.
In the UN, Jan Eliasson became the first UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and later became the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Darfur. Prior to this, he served as President of the UN General Assembly, Chair of Water Aid/Sweden and as a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advocacy Group of the Millennium Development Goals. H.E. Eliasson has received honorary doctorate degrees from numerous universities both in Sweden and in the U.S. He has also been decorated by a number of governments.
Born in Göteborg, Sweden, H.E. Eliasson graduated from the Swedish Naval Academy in 1962 and earned a Master’s degree in Economics and Business Administration at the Göteborg School of Economics and Commerce in 1965.
