Highlights

Panel Discussion with local leaders and Q&A

Perry Watson - Keynote Speaker

Perry Watson built a nationally-renowned basketball program as head coach at Detroit Southwestern High School. Southwestern’s dominance of state prep basketball was evidenced by its 302-34 record during Watson’s 13 seasons at the helm, where he became the winningest coach in the history of the Detroit Public School League. His two state championships combined for a sparkling 55-1 record alone. Forty-five of his players received Division I college scholarships. Southwestern was ranked Number 1 in the nation by USA Today in 1991, while Watson was honored as national Coach of the year.

Watson joined the University of Michigan staff in June of 1991 and was part of the Wolverines’ two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championship Game. Perry took over the University of Detroit-Mercy (UDM) Titan program in 1993, where he led them to their first ever MCC Tournament championship. During his tenure at UDM, his career record was 261-198, three conference championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances, two NIT Tournament appearances, four consecutive 20 win seasons, two 25 win seasons, and 1998 MCC Coach of the Year.

Perry Watson was inducted in the Detroit PSL Coaches Hall of Fame, Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and the Detroit Sports Hall of Fame.
