The South Side Community Federal Credit Union (SSCFCU) is the ONLY community development credit union on the South Side of Chicago . It is a federally chartered not-for-profit financial institution that offers a variety of non-traditional products and services carefully designed to alleviate poverty and economically empower the community, such as free financial education classes, free credit & housing counseling, and low interest rate loans.
SSSCFCU is owned and managed by the community. It serves a predominantly African American field of membership bounded by 22nd St on the north, the city limits on the south, lake Michigan on the east, and Western Avenue on the west. It has been in business since 2003, opening close to 5,000 member accounts, with current assets totaling $4.0 Million. SSCFCU serves as an alternative to currency exchanges and pay day loan stores. It is designated by the U.S. Department of Treasury as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and operates a HUD certified housing counseling program.
As a not-for -profit, SSCFCU is able to offer these high quality products, services and programs by raising grant dollars and tax deductible monetary contributions from concerned citizens like you and me.
SSCFCU has begun a capital campaign to raise funds to provide even more much needed services and programs. It seeks bring about sytemic change at the community level through job creation, small business development and financial literacy. By supporting our event, you support our work.
