Some development highlights for a High Resolution Broadband Multibeam Echo sounder.

This presentation will include some of the requirements in the development process to a new type of multibeam and the field results.
The goal was a broadband echo sounder with full motion compensation and low self noise. The bandwidth of the transducers was set to 200-400 kHz. An extra challenging goal was to make only one model which could do both surface operations as well as operation down to 6000 meter. All existing know how and experience from developing our wide range of MBES was to be transferred into the EM 2040, e.g improved Bottom Detection modes.
Some results from the development stage will be presented and results from ordinary operation to show that the design goals have been met.
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) update. Multi-beam & bathymetrics

When undertaking a hydrographic survey or marine construction task the fundamental requirement is accurate and reliable GNSS positioning and heading. While in a benign marine environment you might consider there are enough satellites to give you positioning but we all know that we have congested ports and obstructed areas on vessels that can compromise 24/7 usage. There is a lot of investment going into maintaining and investing in new GNSS systems from multiple countries. This presentation covers the current status of the GPS, GLONASS and SBAS systems. It then introduces the upcoming Galileo, Compass and QZSS system status.
The summary concludes by looking forward 5 years where there will be many more GNSS satellites up than today and that this will increase availability and productivity for the marine user worldwide.
Towed Survey Platform

Teledyne Odom Hydrographic introduce the towed survey platform, a hydrographic survey system that is designed to reduce the setup time and hence cost of swath survey. Using a custom designed towable vessel along with various Teledyne sensors, the hydrographer can survey using various towing vessels with a previously configured set of offsets which results in small scale surveys to be completed with minimal setup, installation and acceptance time.

The Advantages of 4D Sonar Technology

The traditional method of generating a 3D model underwater is to build it up with from multiple sonar ensonifications or ‘pings’ – each ping yields a discrete profile, and these are then merged to build up the required model. Advances in sonar technology now make it possible to visualise an entire 3D volume via a single ensonification. By repeating the process many times in a second, it becomes possible to monitor movement and change within the volume over time, providing a truly ‘4D’ imaging system, with data available in real time. In this presentation, we will set out the basic advantages of this approach over alternative technologies, with reference to real-world applications such including the Maasvlakte 2 harbour extention project.

This paper will explain different ways to include new useful features in your existing survey spread. It will not only discuss hardware, but also possibilities in the software.

Model-based sediment classification using single-beam echo-sounder signals

Acoustic remote sensing techniques for mapping sediment properties are of great interest because of their low cost and high coverage. In this presentation we discuss sediment classification results using a model-based approach applied to signals obtained with a single-beam echo-sounder, the simplest acoustic remote sensing system, which is however still widely in use. The classification approach is based on matching the measured echo envelope with modelled ones. The method maximally exploits the information contained in the signal, but requires complex modelling and optimization. Information is provided over a variety of sediment types ranging from soft clay to course sand and rough gravel. Maps of sediment grain size, spectral strength of the water-sediment interface roughness and volume scattering in the sediment are produced. The need to account for all these three parameters in the modelling is demonstrated. To minimize computational cost, an efficient version of a genetic algorithm, called differential evolution, is used in order to able to search for the optimum parameter values for each echo-sounder signal.

This presentation will give background on acoustics and will show the main achievements in IXBLUE research and development in low-frequency electro acoustic transduction. Particularly in the development and implementation of high bandwidth / high power acoustic source for applications such as Sub Bottom profiling, acoustic tomography and long-range acoustic communication. Based on pulse compression technique and the use of coupled resonator, these techniques allow to combine high source level and good processing gain.” To bring theory and field practice together, project cases and recorded data will be shown analyzed.
