Songwriters in the Round:
It was so exciting last season when a multi-talented singer/songwriter from the Big Apple, Kenny White, performed to a sold-out house at the WAC. This season the Center is delighted to feature three singer/songwriters from New York City who are superb entertainers, good friends, and work so well as a threesome under the spotlight.
Jonathan Spottiswoode, Amy Correia, and Kenny White each have their own unique style, and when together, present an inspiring evening of music as they take turns performing their own songs as well as accompanying each other. All are accomplished musicians, seasoned veterans with their own following, and artists who tour world-wide. This will be the concert not to be missed!
Referred to as a “genius and a “downtown ringleader” by The New Yorker, Spottiswoode is the son of an American opera singer and an English clergyman. The frontman for his own cult seven-piece band, Spottiswoode & His Enemies, Spottiswoode is the recipient of two Independent Music Awards and four nominations. He has drawn comparisons to Ray Davies, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. “One of New York’s more colorful band leaders for more that a decade,”said John Schaefer, WNYC. Paste Magazine calls him“Nothing short of transportive!”
Amy Correia is an award-winning singer and songwriter who has drawn comparisons to Tom Waits and Michelle Shocked. Her latest album “You Go Your Way” was a top 20 album at WFUV in 2010, and the Independent Music Awards awarded her the Best Folk, Singer-Songwriter Album in 2011 – in both the popular and juried divisions.
“It’s fun to try to place Amy Correia on the contemporary musical landscape. Her distinctive brand of musical storytelling sets her outside the usual set of quirky female singer-songwriters making her as one New York Times reviewer claimed, ‘more like the cat who eats the canary than the fragile bird itself.’” Anthony Decurtis, sitting in for John Schaefer on WNYC’s Soundcheck.
Kenny White is a relative newcomer to the world of the touring singer-songwriter, but the long road he’s driven to get to this point is evident in his soulful and witty material accompanied by dazzling keyboards and guitar. He has released four CDs since 2001. The latest, Comfort in the Static on Wildflower Records, was released to critical acclaim in the US and Europe. Pete Fornatale, (WFUV) declared it his “favorite album of the year…riveting…compelling” and David Crosby describes him as “A true wordsmith and musician who reveals a fine sense of humor, as well. He has earned a place among my favorite singer/songwriters.
