Surf’s Up Retreat
with Rob Appell
It’s time to wax up your surfboard, throw on some shades,
and head on over to Missouri Star to ride the waves.
Rob Appell of Man Sewing will be hosting an awesome retreat
for all you quilters who can’t get enough of the sand and surf.
He will guide you through two epic classes
and keep you entertained with his amazing trunk show too!
If you’re a fan of Man Sewing, this is your chance to spend some time
with the incredibly fun, always energetic, Rob Appell.
You’ll have a totally tubular time!
This super fun class will not only teach you the fastest way to create tons of Half Square triangles, but will also help you through the design process of building the quilt top. Then the real fun begins, we will create fusible appliqué gears using a variety of methods including the Sizzix Big Shot die cutter.
Supplies Recommended - Fabric - One 10”x10” precut pack (or four 5”x5”) colors should be tonal (from one color range with many shades) Steam Punk is traditionally Sepia with Black and Grays, but you may work in any palette. These fabrics will be used as the Background - One 10”x10” solid Grays to black for gears Again, you may work in colors that please you. Fusible Web - I prefer Heat N Bond Featherlite about 6 yards, this varies on how many gears you want have, and it is twice as much as you think due to the shadow gears. Maybe a rotating cutting mat if you have one.
Color Strata Quilts
Learn from his newest experiment in color strata building. These Strata quilts are so fun, easy and a great canvas for machine quilting. We will focus on cutting and constructing the various types of strata, adding our pop colors, and building a quilt top. The choices in designs are limitless. These Quilts Are Highly Addictive!
Supplies Recommended - Duel feed or Walking foot if you have one, lots of strip piecing for this workshop.
Fabric - Color Strata Jelly Rolls, Fat Quarter Packs, or anything from your stash. You need about 20 colors, solids preferred, but we love creativity, so bring what you love too. Colors should have about 5 to 7 choices per color family or more, we will be creating a gradient of color. You may also work in one color - bring as many shades of that color as possible. Fabric quantity will vary based on quilt size, a Jelly Roll is good for 45” x 45”. We like Jet Black, White Fairy Frost, or a complimentary color to your strata color choices. 1 Yard - maybe a few straight pins - Medium to large binder clips - at least 6,optional for keeping organized.
