Event Details

Our next #SolarChat will be held on Wednesday, 5/9/12, between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m EST. We'll be discussing net metering opportunities and challanges. As you may know, net metering comes in many shapes and sizes but all roads lead to your meter spinning backwards, increased return on your solar investment, greater savings, and overall solar growth. Net metering is a game-changing concept that can be applied to individual homeownership, utilities and communities. Let’s take some time to explore the very different applications for the same “backward spinning” concept/incentive and explore ways we can expand on each.

Moderator Raina Brett Russo (@EcoOutfitters), president and co-founder of EcoOutfitters.net, will be joined by Mike Taylor (@SolarMikeTaylor), director of research for the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA); as well as two team members from Vote Solar, including Annie Carmichael (@AnnieVoteSolar), solar policy director and Rosalind Jackson (@VoteSolar), director of communications and development. Also joining us will be Joy Hughes (@solargardens), the founder and CEO of Solar Panel Hosting LLC.

The Solar Electric Power Association is an educational non-profit organization dedicated to helping utilities integrate solar energy into their portfolio. Mike leads the department’s efforts to provide data and analysis on utilities and solar market development. Prior to joining SEPA in 2006, Mike spent seven years with the Minnesota State Energy Office where he developed and managed Minnesota’s first statewide PV incentive program. Mike holds a master’s degree in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy from the U. of Minnesota. His home was 88 percent solar in 2011.

Vote Solar works to build the economies of scale necessary to bring solar into the mainstream. Accordingly, Annie leads state campaigns throughout the West and Midwest. She rejoined the company after managing government affairs in the Interior West for SunEdison. She was previously with the Alliance to Save Energy. She holds environmental policy degrees from Oxford University and UC Santa Cruz. She lives in Boulder, CO.

Rosalind manages media, member and donor relations for Vote Solar. Previously she spent five years directing and implementing PR campaigns for all manner of clean energy and sustainable business innovators. She has degrees in Environmental Science and Communications from UC Berkeley.

Joy's company, Solar Panel Hosting LLC, assists developers and community leaders in establishing and managing subscription-based community solar gardens everywhere. She also runs the educational website solargardens.org, dedicated to making affordable solar power available to all humanity. Joy lives off the grid at 8000 feet elevation in Colorado's San Luis Valley.

#SolarChat welcomes solar and renewable industry experts and consumers who are "solar curious" to discuss relevant issues like solar energy, solar PV, solar hot water, solar pool heating, and related subjects. The Twitter chat provides an opportunity to connect homeowners and qualified installation professionals, to demonstrate the affordability and environmental impact of all types of solar solutions, and to educate consumers on this emerging field. "We believe in the power of solar to change the world," says Raina Russo, moderator of #SolarChat and CEO/co-founder of EcoOutfitters.net. "We hope #SolarChat will further advance EcoOutfitters' goal of making solar a reality for every American home and business."

For those new to Twitter, a hashtag (#) is an easy way to find and follow people who are tweeting about a certain topic. #SolarChat has a simple mission: Curious consumers, energy experts, and installation professionals can tune into Twitter at the designated chat time to share advice and resources, weigh in on discussion topics, pose questions or concerns, and work together to advance solar awareness.

#SolarChat is held on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST.
