Event Details

Community solar is a concept that is capturing everyone’s attention. Is this the solution to providing clean energy without exceptions? What does community solar even mean? What are the various community solar models? Where are the growing markets? How can individuals and businesses get involved in community solar? Find out about and discuss this concept in greater detail at the July 17th session of #SolarChat.

Raina Russo (@EcoOutfitters and @ChatSolar), #SolarChat's founder, will be joined by Joy Hughes, founder of the Solar Gardens Institute (@SolarGardens), Rosana Francescato, community solar advocate (@SolarRosana), and Laura (Cina) Burrington, managing director of the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (@mnrenewables), and Miguel Yupangco of @SolarMosaic.

More About Our Panelists

Joy Hughes founded the Solar Gardens Institute, providing training and tools to "solar gardeners" (community organizers / project managers) everywhere. She runs the Institute's website SolarGardens.org, dedicated to making affordable solar power available to all humanity. Joy lives in a solar home on Orcas Island, WA.

Rosana Francescato combines her passions for solar power and community as a community solar advocate. This began with her quest to install solar on her San Francisco condo complex and has evolved into blogging and solar analysis. She's the California Solar Gardener for the Solar Gardens Institute and is on the steering committee of the Local Clean Energy Alliance. She has hands-on experience installing solar with GRID Alternatives, where she's been the top individual fundraiser three years in a row.

Laura Burrington is the managing director of the Minnesota Renewable energy Society. Her work with Community Solar has consisted of managing a Community Solar Background Study for Minnesota that culminated in applying for funding for a 1MW Community Solar project in partnership with Xcel Energy, Minnesota's largest investor-owned utility. She previously worked for Solarflow Solar Leasing and is a passionate advocate and volunteer for environmental causes of all types.

Miguel Yupangco manages Mosaic’s digital media and has a background in corporate sustainability reporting. Transitioning to solar, he is a firm believer that accessibility and profitability will change the solar industry. A lover of all things digital, he utilizes his obsession with social media to spread the word about solar investing.
