Event Details

Join Raina Russo (@EcoOutfitters) and the #SolarChat team on May 8th for a #SolarChat discussing democracy, politics, and the role they play in advancing solar energy in the U.S.

Our special panelists will be The Honorable Jennifer M. Granholm (@JenGranholm), former two-term governor of Michigan and a Distinguished Practitioner of Law and Public Policy at UC Berkeley; Adam Browning (@VoteSolar), the executive director of Vote Solar, a non-profit grassroots organization working to fight climate change and foster economic opportunity by bringing solar energy into the mainstream; New York Assembly Member Dan Quart (@DanQuartNY)

As Governor, Granholm led the state through a brutal economic downturn that resulted from a meltdown in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. She worked relentlessly to diversify the state's economy, strengthen its auto industry, preserve the manufacturing sector, and add new, emerging sectors, such as clean energy, to Michigan's economic portfolio. During her tenure, she pioneered clean energy policies, working with business and labor, Republicans and Democrats to create new economic opportunities in Michigan. Her leadership attracted more than 89,000 jobs and $9.4 billion in clean energy investments to Michigan. Prior to becoming governor, Granholm served as a federal prosecutor in Detroit. In 1998, Granholm was elected Michigan's first female attorney general. Granholm and her husband, Dan Mulhern, recently authored the political bestseller, A Governor's Story: The Fight for Jobs and America's Economic Future, which tells how Michigan pioneered ways out of an economic storm and offers proven advice for a nation desperate to create jobs.

Browning co-founded Vote Solar after working on the successful campaign for San Francisco’s 2001 solar bond. The organization has engaged in state, local and federal advocacy campaigns to remove regulatory barriers and implement key policies needed to bring solar to scale since 2002. Prior to Vote Solar, Adam spent eight years with the Environmental Protection Agency, where he ran an award-winning pollution prevention program.

Dan Quart represents New York’s 73rd Assembly District, which encompasses the Upper East Side, Midtown East, Turtle Bay and Sutton Place. Among Quart's past initiatives in the green space is when he partnered with Columbia Law School’s Environmental Law Program to prosecute a case in New York State Court seeking to protect park lands and uphold the State’s “open space” law.

For those new to Twitter, a hashtag (#) is an easy way to find and follow people who are tweeting about a certain topic. #SolarChat, founded by EcoOutfitters.net's Raina Russo, has a simple mission: Curious consumers, energy experts, and installation professionals can tune into Twitter at the designated chat time to share advice and resources, weigh in on discussion topics, pose questions or concerns, and work together to advance solar awareness.

#SolarChat is held on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST, with special sessions held periodically. See EcoOutfitters.net for more information.
