With 3D production moving into the main stream, the age old battle of side by side vs. beam splitter is possibly more heated than ever.  The side by side configuration has the obvious advantage of looking and operating largely like an ordinary 2D camera.  It is hampered however by limitations in certain capabilities. including control over the 3D effect.  Beam splitters offer full control but are cumbersome and large. Discussions on the topic commonly revolve around questions like the following: If my eyes are 2.5" inches apart, why not just shoot everything with a camera that has an IO of 2.5"? Specifically how do beam splitters technically compare and contrast to a side by side 3D camera? What technologies are on the horizon?

Please join stereoscopic industry pioneer Jason Goodman, CEO, 21st Century 3D and SMPTE PDA Now as we navigate the landscape of 3D cameras.
