"The year's most instructively icky documentary...
It won't help if you keep repeating, 'It's only a documentary.'"
- Richard Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE
JT Petty's S&MAN (pronounced "Sandman") is a terrifying investigation into voyeurism, underground horror, and the tricky balance between sympathy and sadism when we watch death. The midnight fave of SXSW, Toronto and Sitges makes its New York theatrical run with a week-long engagement, October 1 - 7.
Horror is a counterintuitive pleasure: the more we suffer in watching it, the better. Exploring what compels us to see movies that hurt, director JT Petty (THE BURROWERS) seeks out a horror scholar, a sexologist, a forensic psychiatrist -- and of course, the filmmakers who make it their specialty. Through home, on-set and convention visits, Petty and his crew scrutinize subjects who are, if not outright liars, at least intent on blurring the line between themselves and the brutally subversive films they make.
84 minutes. In English. Presented in Blu-ray. Unrated. A Magnolia Pictures release.
*** LIVE IN PERSON: Director JT Petty and subject Eric Rost will be at all screenings on Friday, October 1.
*** COME EARLY FOR LIQUOR & SNACKS! Last call 5 minutes before showtime
