Share Small Projects for Small Farms

Event Details

A monthly program designed to introduce new and small farmers to basic projects and techniques that can be implemented on their farming operation. A wide variety of topics are planned to involve the different sectors of agriculture. 

These programs were developed to provide information to individuals interested in starting a farm or improving their small agriculture operation. These classes have something to offer everyone who may be interested in producing food for themselves or looking for an option for income.



 

May 7th -Learn from the expert, Ed Jennings Regional Livestock Extension Agent, on the key components to livestock fence construction. Both traditional barbed wire and electric fence construction will be demonstrated.


July 2nd-Learn from the expert, Jamie Cohen Marion County Equine Extension Agent, on how to create compost gold for your operation.


August 6th - Learn from the expert, Cami Esmel McAvoy Multi-county Commercial Horticulture Agent, how to create and maintain a floating hydroponic garden. A portion of this class will be outside constructing floating gardens. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.


November 5th September 3rd-Learn from the expert, Jonael Bosques-Mendez Marion County Small Farms Extension Agent, how to build a chicken tractor for poultry production. RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 5th!


October 1st-Learn from the experts, Aparna Gazula and Carolyn Saft, Alachua and Suwannee County Extension Agents, how to cultivate mushrooms. This class was presented at AgriTunty 2013, because of the interest we asked for an encore presentation. Attendees will learn how to  grow mushrooms in bags and as well as log culture.


November 5th-Learn from the experts, Jonael Bosques-Mendez and Cami Esmel McAvoy, how to construct a small greenhouse unheated for season extension, and transplant production/protection. A portion of this class will be held outside. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

December 3rd-Learn from the expert, on how to repair small engines. Please dress approriately for conditions that may arise when dealing with engines (oil, grease, dirt, fuel, etc). Speaker will be announced shortly.

 

***Participants are urged to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and environment. (ie. Sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, closed toe shoes, etc). Portions of these classes will be held outside in the elements or in dirty, dusty conditions.***

The Floating Hydroponic Gardens class is full! If you have pre-registered, then you are guaranteed a kit. If you have not pre-registered, we can NOT guarantee you a kit.

The Build A Chicken Tractor class on September 3rd  has been rescheduled to run in conjunction with the Build A Small Greenhouse class on November 5th.

The Grow Your Own Mushrooms class has been limited to 15 attendees. If you have pre-registered by September 18th, you are guaranteed a kit. If you have not pre-registered by September 27th, we can NOT gaurantee you a kit.
