Saturday March 7th
Creator’s Studio III

SLG Publishing Creator’s Studio

In 2003 SLG Publishing hosted the first Creator’s Studio workshop where working comic book artists and writers came into our warehouse and took part in panel discussions about the craft of creating comic books. Editors were present to review portfolios and the day long event  turned out to be a great deal of fun for everyone involved and was, a big success.

In 2009 SLG Publishing is reviving the Creator’s Studio with an ambitious twist as it establishes what we lovingly call The Center for Comic Book Study. Throughout the year SLG will be holding workshops, panels, classes and  seminars in its warehouse with the hope of helping aspiring comic book creators of all ages and experience levels to learn more about their chosen craft and get perspectives from working professionals.

All classes will be held in the luxurious compound which is the SLG Publishing office/warehouse. Schedules and speakers and programs will be announced on an ongoing basis so watch our website for more information.

Join us for our third Creator’s Studio seminar as we present a day-long series of panels and seminars on comics and their creation. End the day with an artist-in-residence seminar that includes a live drawing demonstration by our gallery’s March feature artist Karl Christian Krumpholz as well as portfolio reviews by SLG editors.

Our featured panels will be

COMICS ECON 101 - The harsh realities of life as a comic book creator. SLG President Dan Vado will moderate a panel on the economic realities of life in the comic book business. Dan Shahin, owner of San Jose shop Hijinx Comics will participate to offer a retailer’s perspective on comics as a business.

IMAGINING THE PAGE -  Writers Landry Walker and Serena Valentino and resident artist of the day Karl Krumpholz  discuss the particulars of writing a page from a visual standpoint and how to communicate your ideas to an artist as well as what an artists might like to hear from a writer.

CONJURING THE PAGE - Fresh off the opening of his Famous Drunkards Gallery Show , Karl Christian Krumpholz sits down at a drawing table and demonstrates his storytelling technique as well as his approach to drawing from both the technical and creative perspectives. This is an interactive presentation that we are calling Drawing in the Round. Questions from the audience are encouraged.
