sjDANCEco Presents 2013
Continuing it’s commitment to expand the breadth of Dance performance in San José, sjDANCEco brings SpectorDance/Monterey and it’s Dance Media Ocean and Common Groundto SJSU’s Dance Theatre, March 1 & 2, 2012.
Ocean a collaboration between SpectorDance and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute bringstogetherartists,scientists,educators,and presentersto expandperspectives,stimulatediscussion,and contribute original solutions to the challenges facing one of the Earth's most valuable natural resources. Ocean weaves together live interviews with leading ocean scientists, HD underwater footage, original music and dance. Scientists; Dr. James Barry (Friday evening), Dr. George Matsumoto (Saturday afternoon) and Judith Connor (Saturday evening) from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institutewill speak after each performance. Ocean premiered in November 2011 and was performed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. as part of Capitol Hill’s Ocean Week in 2012.Major funding for this production has come from Tom’s of Maine, The James Irvine Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Kalliopeia Foundation, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, Community Foundation for Monterey County and others.
Also on the program is Common Grounda dance media project celebrating the poetry and politics of agriculture. This work explores current issues in agriculture, including immigration, land development, environmental issues, and new realities of competing in a world market. Beyond the conflicts and divergent perspectives, Common Ground also focuses on the shared values of the earth including the universal passion for farming, the fundamental need to prosper and provide, and the importance of respecting the earth and one another. Common Ground aims to expand perceptions and possibilities, and acknowledge the beauty and abundance of our local harvests.
