The National Portrait Gallery presents a Cultures in Motion Program, Singing Praises: Mahalia & Martin. This program celebrates the life and work of Mahalia Jackson, “the voice of the civil rights movement, and her relationship with Martin Luther King, Jr.  Written by Judlyne Lilly, Julia Nixon appears as Mahalia Jackson, with Michael Mack as Martin Luther King, Jr.  September 16, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture.

Cultures in Motion is the National Portrait Gallery's performing arts series. Broad in scope, the series is designed to educate, entertain, and promote mutual understanding of the diverse cultures that make up both the NPG collection and the mosaic of American heritage. The series uses the medium of portrayal to interpret the lives of the sitters via theater, music, and the literary and visual arts.
