Sindiwe Magona Lecture
Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM (EDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
South Africa Yesterday and Today draws attention to the challenges and successes of life in South Africa since the time of transition until the present.
CENCIA is pleased to welcome author and playwright Sindiwe Magona. Dr. Magona will be giving a talk about her one-woman play, Mother to Mother.
Mother to Mother is about the killing of Amy Biehl, an American Fulbright scholar who was stabbed to death by a mob of students when she drove into the township of Guguletu on the eve of the country’s independence election. Told from the perspective of the mother of one of the boys accused of her death, this writing takes the form of an epistolary addressed to the mother of Amy Biehl. The mother of the accused is torn between feelings of guilt and remorse on the one hand and of anger and defensiveness on the other, thereby illustrating the extremely delicate and volatile moral environment in the country at the time of transition. The fact that Amy Biehl’s killers appeared before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and actually went to work for the Amy BiehlFoundation after their release from prison makes Magona’s story all the more poignant and relevant to discussions of South Africa’s many complexities.
