Building Teams With Power & Political Savvy
“Managing complex and interdependent organizations in an effective and responsible way requires, first, sufficient power to make up for the power gap inherent in leadership jobs and then, second, the willingness to use power in as responsible way as possible”, according to John Kotter, author of Power and Influence- Beyond Formal Authority. Political savvy is a vital competence for any executive, but it’s not taught in most leadership or grad school courses.Political Competence is the one skill everyone wishes to have more of – but no one talks about it.
Most people, to be blunt, are remarkably naïve when it comes to understanding power dynamics in a complex organization. At the same time, many others are incredibly cynical. Both distort reality. For an organization to be effective, leaders need to develop these skills within their teams.
