Building Teams With Power & Political Savvy

“Managing complex and interdependent organizations in an effective and responsible way requires, first, sufficient power to make up for the power gap inherent in leadership jobs and then, second, the willingness to use power in as responsible way as possible”, according to John Kotter, author of Power and Influence- Beyond Formal Authority.  Political savvy is a vital competence for any executive, but it’s not taught in most leadership or grad school courses.Political Competence is the one skill everyone wishes to have more of – but no one talks about it.

Most people, to be blunt, are remarkably naïve when it comes to understanding power dynamics in a complex organization. At the same time, many others are incredibly cynical. Both distort reality. For an organization to be effective, leaders need to develop these skills within their teams.

Our Speaker

June Drewry Photo

Ms. Drewry has extensive international experience in the insurance and financial services industry at the senior management level, as a Corporate CIO, Business Unit CIO and as President of a third party administration subsidiary.  She also has Board experience with both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.  Ms. Drewry has particular expertise in change management, business/IT alignment, strategy implementation, and managing IT as a business within the business.

Over the last several years, Ms. Drewry has developed a reputation for excellence in helping organizations improve their leadership development capabilities and succession planning. She coaches both senior IT leadership teams and individuals; and is sought after as both a speaker and an advisor to current leaders.

Previous assignments include Global Chief Information Officer for the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and this same position at Aon Corporation and Lincoln National Corporation.  Ms. Drewry currently serves on an Advisory Board for Diversified Information Technologies, Inc and is very active in the Society for Information Management, serving as Director of the Leadership Development Institute and previously as President of the Society.

Throughout her career, Ms. Drewry held several CIO positions, working in both centralized and decentralized organizations, each time with fast and sustainable turnarounds.  She also had other strategic responsibilities during her career such as corporate planning, knowledge management and business transformation.

Ms. Drewry also served as President of a Third Party Administrator (TPA), primarily in the business of handling the administrative responsibilities for pension plans.  This P&L experience adds a dimension to her career in information technology.  Having walked in her business partners’ shoes, she is better able to understand their challenges and needs.

Ms. Drewry earned her BA degree in Mathematics with a Business minor from Caldwell College for Women.  She earned several awards throughout her career for innovative business use of technology and leadership in information technology.  In 2008, She was named to the CIO Hall of Fame (http://www.cio.com/cio-awards/cio-hall-of-fame/index).
