Sickle Cell Miami Holiday "Give Back" Weekend!
Monday, September 1, 2014 at 12:00 AM - Thursday, January 1, 2015 at 12:00 AM (EDT)
September is Sickle Cell Month!!!
Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited, chronic blood disorder that affects thousands of Americans. Sickle Cell Disease is inherited from both parents who are either carriers of the sickle cell trait or parents with sickle cell disease. Nationwide, the sickle trait is present in 1 in 12 African Americans, with 1 in 500 African Americans having sickle cell disease, and 1 in 36,000 Hispanics having sickle cell disease (higher concentrations exist in Hispanics of other countries). Sickle Cell Disease is found in many nationalities including African Americans, Arabs, Greeks, Italians, Latin Americans, and persons from India.
The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Miami-Dade County Chapter needs your support. September is Sickle Cell Month and we want you to spread the word. So, during the month of September, we are asking our supporters to commit to making a tax-deductible donation to help us, help families adversely impacted by Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Trait. In addition, we want you to encourage your family members, friends, co-workers, and associates to make a donation as well - hence, the "A$K Ten to Give Ten ($10)" Campaign.
This fundraising initiative challenges Sickle Cell supporters to either make a contribution in the amount of $100 or get ten of their friends to either make a donation of $100 or embrace the challenge by getting ten of their friends to make a donation of $10 or more. Subsequently, those friends would conduct the same challenge, and so on, and so on, and so on. The goal is to increase awareness of Sickle Cell by spreading the word and encouraging everyone to provide some level of support to benefit the children and families served at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University of Miami Sickle Cell Center, Holtz Children's Hospital, and Miami Children's Hospital.
During the month of September and beyond, we will be conducting several events for the benefit of Sickle Cell children and patients. Our annual programming includes Boggy Creek Summer Camp, Educational Presentations, a Virtual Run/Walk, the Sickle Cell 5000 Run/walk, a Quarter Auction Fundraiser, Breakfast with Santa Toy Drive, and other fun and entertaining events.

Sickle Cell Children from 0 to 13 are invited to attend and they all receive toys which have been donated from various partnering organizations and individuals.

Boggy Creek Summer Camp
The Boggy Creek Summer Camp is a week-long event in which Sickle Cell patients travel to Eustis, Florida to experience fun and relaxation away from home. The children enjoy fun, games, and crafts during their week in Boggy Creek. Transportation is provided via a chartered bus for camp participants. Our children attend this event during the month of August and most recently attended from August 4 - 8, 2014.
The Virtual Run/Walk (VRW) was an event scheduled on September 6th from 7 am - 11:59 pm. During the VRW, supporters are encouraged to run or walk at their leisure and at the location of their choice. As part of your participation in this event, we are asking runners and walkers to select their level of involvement, post the results on our Facebook page, and then make a donation to the SCDAA Miami-Dade County Chapter. There is no require run/walk length and we trust that all runners and walkers will help us, help children and famililes impacted by Sickle Cell. Our Sickle Cell 5000 Run/Walk Facebook page is located at https://www.facebook.com/SickleCell5000.
The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Miami-Dade Chapter needs your support and solicits your involvement. As we continue the fight to "Help Break the Sickle Cycle," we continue to provide resources and support for children and families impacted by Sickle Cell. So, during the month of September, remember "A$K Ten to Give Ten ($10)."
